What android GPS app would be good to use for Geocaching?

Q. I have just joined the Geocaching website. I have a samsung captivate android 2.2 firmware version. I need to know of applications that have a gps that allows you to type in the coordinates numbers, that allow you to play the game. Any suggestions on an easy use app?
Thanks in Advance.

A. First of all, when you say "the Geocaching website" I'm going to assume you mean Geocaching.com...

The official Geocaching app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.groundspeak.geocaching seems to be the best one out there, but it costs $10.

I use "c:geo - opensource" https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cgeo.geocaching and it works reasonably well, but sometimes the caches don't show up in the exact right spot on the map... but when that happens at least it shows you that the location may be off (circles it in orange). And there's also a workaround for the issue, so it's not that big of a deal. Bottom line: this app will be fine if you want to save money, but if you don't mind the $10, the official app is better.

The OpenCaching app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.garmin.android.apps.opencache looks pretty good, but it's only for OpenCaching.com

What is the most accurate gps tracker app on the android market?
Q. I'm looking for a gps tracker app that can do "live" tracking between friends. I also need it to be as accurate as possible. Latitude isn't accurate enough (sometimes its miles off). Any suggestions?

A. Any of them really. Accuracy is totally dependant on how well GPS is received, and no app can receive GPS better than any other.

Is there a GPS-type app that you can set to alert you when your driving speed goes to high?
Q. So for example, if I'm driving on a freeway with 55mph speed limit, I could set the GPS app to "ding" or something if I go over a certain speed, which I could set to something like 64mph. Just wondering. Also, I would prefer an app for the iPhone, but if there isn't one for the iPhone I would still like to know if there is one for Android.

Thanks!

A. What do you think the speedometer is for?

Is there a GPS Android app that works without Internet connection?
Q. I bought a samsung galaxy y 2 months ago and it has gps feature unfortunately I need internet connection to use google maps navigation so I'm wondering if theres any GPS app that doesnt require internet. Thanks!
I forgot to mention that im from Italy :x

A. Yes, you need a pure GPS app. They are not cheap and you can find them on the market. Here is one example from Navigon for US. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.navigon.navigator_checkout_us

What accessories to wear with cocktail dress for party?

Q. I bought a coral, halter neck maxi dress to wear to work end of year party. Its similar to the dress in the link, but mine has a skinny coral belt with gold studs under the bust.

Ie shoes, jewellrey? I was thinking gold high heeled sandals. Thanks!
Also what colour/style bag?

A. A cute white peacoat would look cute, with some gold earings and a pop of color like turquoise. The shoes sound good too don't forget to paint your toes ;) and some chunky bracelets will complete the look. Don't wear too big of a necklace because your dress is already a halter top and wraps around the neck. And for your hair, a low messy bun with a braided gold head band like this http://m.pinterest.com/pin/411727590903170113/

What is the best android launcher out there?
Q. I have in mind something that uses very little ram to replace the stock launcher
I have android 2.3.5

A.

Which Android Launcher in your opinion is the best?
Q. I have purchased Nova launcher prime and I download Atom Launcher, I also have Launcher 8 which is a windows phone theme and Vire Launcher which is a beta launcher and shows lots of potential. Which launcher should I use. These are in the play store so look for them if you don't have any of these apps. Thanks. ps. Nova and Atom are my top right now because of Nova's jellybean look on my ics phone and Atom just feels right.

A. GO Launcher, Installed it last year and have not turned it off yet. Many different ways to customize your phone including being able to unlock it by shaking your phone.

Is it advisable to use the touch wiz home launcher on the Galaxy S3?
Q. Is it advisable for me to use the touch wiz home launcher or should I download a third party launcher. What advantages will I get by using the touch wiz default launcher on my Galaxy S3? And what effects will the touch wiz or the third party launcher have on my device?

A. Its not compulsory to use a touchwiz launcher, thats the stock launcher comes as default for S3, if you dont like the interface and how it reacts, just go to Google Play Store and install your desired launchers like LauncherPro, Go Launcher and Holo Launcher and so many.

And about features, Most of the launchers have the same features but change in design and style, once you start to read the description and screenshots of the launchers in the play store, you would get an idea on how to move with android launchers.

How do you set a Android launcher as your default launcher?

Q. When i hit the home button, it just takes me back to the stock android screen and doesn't give me the option of choosing. Is their a way in the settings that i can change the default launcher?

I don't know if it helps but I am trying to make the Espier Launcher my default launcher.

A. Go into your phone settings, then applications, manage applications, switch to "All" tab. Scroll down to "TWLauncher," touch it and select to clear defaults. That will clear the pre-set deafult, so then when you touch homescreen you should get the option for which launcher to use, and should be able to check a box for don't ask again, set as default something or other.

good books to learn android progamming and c# programming?
Q. I know java pretty well and im looking to get into some android programming (at least for fun, but hopefully to make a little side money). I've also dabbled in c# a little bit but i would like a book to really learn as much as possible and to have a reference.

I don't want the books to be crazy expensive and i would like for them to be relatively easy to read and understand. Any suggestions would be awesome thanks!

A. I personally don't like learning from books and would rather learn from the internet. Android has some great documentation which you could take advantage of. There are tutorials on Youtube too that you could take advantage of. C# is a language so it has many many tutorials all throughout the web; all you have to do is search for it.

Here's the link for the Android docs:
http://developer.android.com/guide/index.html

Here's one c# tutorial:
http://www.csharp-station.com/Tutorial.aspx

BTW for reference, there's no better source than the internet because it never gets outdated =P. Good luck.

How do you insert user input into an SQLite Database in Android?
Q. So I'm fairly new to Android programming, and I have an SQL database class set up, and I can add items to it just fine from within its own class. The problem is that I can't implement a method in my main class to add items to the database, it just crashes the application. How do I access the database from a separate class?
I have tried creating another instance, however since the database class is also an Activity, it crashes the program

A. If you create a new instance of the database class from the launcher activity to set it up, surely you could just create a few public methods in the database class to insert/update/delete etc from the launcher activity?

How to get emoji for Android ?

Q. I'm on twitter alot and I always see certain people that have Androids using emoji but I can't figure out how I can do it. Lol any help?

A. handcent SMS or Go SMS Pro, with Emoji plug-in.

Is there a way to change how my Android phone displays certain things?
Q. Such as smiley faces? Like, my Samsung Galaxy S shows little green, like, aliens as smiley faces. But I downloaded an app called GO Keyboard, and it has something called Emoji on it. I like the cute faces the app has, but I only see an empty box when I type one in. My friend can see it on her iPod just fine though, so I was wondering if there was a way to change how my phone displays things.

A. It's in your messaging settings, not the Keyboard settings.
If you're using the stock Android messaging system, I don't think there's an option for it.
But if you have an SMS/MMS service downloaded, there's an option in the settings to change how the emoticons show up.

Is there a Emoji App that is compatible with all smartphones?
Q. I have friends with Androids and I can see their Emoji figures but they can't see mine. I have an Iphone 4.

A. Whats up, I actually merely wanted to make it possible for pretty much all apple followers discover that they currently have an overstock of i phone 4's and so are giving away them but you have to be speedy.

I just received mine yesterday in the mail!

What is the best battery saver android?(Better if you had make a experiments)?

Q. I had install Juice Defender Ultimate,Easy battery saver,One touch battery saver and battery doctor....If someone know whut is the power and strongest battery saver for my galaxy s advance?!

A. Hmm.. I have used easy battery saver and it seems to be working fine. But I recommend you to follow some steps like turnning of WiFi, background data, stop using live wallpapers.. etc to get a better battery life. Rather than using another app running in the background for saving the battery its better to not run any such app instead use a Task Killer apps. Like the advanced "Advanced Task Killer" which lets you stop the unwanted apps and saves you a lot of battery.

What are the best free android apps to get for my htc evo phone? Is there a battery saver app?
Q. It can be games, tools, or even a photo editing app. Since my phone drains a lot, someone told me about an app for saving battery, but I forgot the name of it, so what is the best app than can save/increase the battery life. thanks

A. -"Photoshop Express" is a decent free photo editing app.
-"Angry birds" is an extremely popular game that is free in the Android market.
-"TuneIn" Radio is an application for listening to local radio stations, it uses the internet to get them, unlike the FM radio app that requires you to use headphones as an antenna, which doesn't work very well.
-"Shop Savvy" is a good product search/barcode search application.
-"VoterMap" is a cool app for political discussions if you are interested in that sort of thing.
-"Runkeeper" is a really nice exercise management application.
-eBuddy is an IM client that can connect to anything from AIM, Yahoo IM, MSN, Facebook chat, ect.

Those are some of my most used free applications.

How do I develop Android Apps in DrJava?

What programs do I need to make android apps?
Q. So I know I need an android SDK. But is there anything els I need. I am working on windows xp. Thank You in advance.
I do not know much the most I have ever programed was a little javascript

A. That's all you need for software. Otherwise, you need to know Java rather well. I already recommended the following to someone else:

1. Java intro tutorial: http://download.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/java/index.html It is no cost and self-paced. This gets you up and running.

2. The best combo I've found after that for proper paid training is at gogotraining.com. They have an Android programming training program where you can take intro to Java 6 with swing and servlets and then roll right into intro and advanced Android programming courses or just do the Android on their own. Find it here: http://gogotraining.com/training/programs/android-development.php

Good luck!

How can I become an androin and IOS application developer?
Q. I have some unique ideas for making games and the platform which will suit that games is mobile phone so I had a taught of trying to develop an application of android and IOS.

I want to know that what are the requirements if an individual wants to become an application developer I had downloaded Android SDK I want to know that can I develop apps without knowing C, C++ etc.

I have experience in this field as I am having several blogs running and had done many things with mobile phones and gadgets.

A. For iOS developer: If you know alittle bit of C or have programmed before, then you need to learn Objective-C. Expert teacher Mark Lassoff's "Objective-C Tutorial for Beginners" will teach you the basics of Objective-C and get you ready for iOS development. After you've learned Objective-C, you'll be ready for Xcode and the iOS development environment.

For Android Developer: You need to learn Java. Downlaod the java tutorial.

Does the Virgin Mobile phone HTC EVO V 4G have the capability to use android beam?

Q. Just wondering so I will be able to use it with my Google nexus 7.

A. no, the Evo V 4G does NOT have NFC, which is required

no, you can't use beam with your Nexus 7, but you can still transmit via bluetooth, wifi, email, etc.

How to get S Beam on other android phone ?
Q. I have a samsung Infuse 4g and I'd like to know if there is any way possible to get this feature in my phone .Also I'd like to how to install NFC which is required in order to get S Beam.

Can you beam someone into outerspace in Star Trek?
Q. There are so many occasions when they could do that (like in TNG) but they don't. is it against some kind of ethical code to beam someone into outer space?
lol it always seems such a funny thought to me. Scenario: a Romulan ambassador refuses to compromise with Picard. Picard gets pissed and orders Geordi: beam the b**tard into space!

A. It's unethical, but it's been done a couple of times in urgent situations:

"Wolf in the Fold" (TOS) - The crew discovers a non-corporeal entity which is capable of possessing people and was responsible for the Jack the Ripper murders of 1888. In order to keep the entity from going on another rampage, the crew trap it in its current host, knock the host out with an injection, and then beam the host's body into space (wide beam, maximum dispersal) which effectively "kills" the entity. Tough break for the host, but they didn't have time to figure out a way to save him without turning the entity loose to run amuck all over the ship.

"Datalore" (TNG) - Data's "twin brother" Lore is discovered, reassembled, and proves to be hostile. They end up beaming him into space just as he's about to kill someone with a phaser. Unlike the "Ripper" host, Lore doesn't get the dispersal beaming. Since he's an android, he survives the exposure to space and floats around for a few years until he's rescued by a passing ship.

There is a long-standing Star Trek joke that the one person whose s**t list you absolutely do NOT want to wind up on is not the captain, but the transporter operator. :-)

EDIT - @Esper: Thanks, I forgot about Nomad (episode "The Changeling").

Is the iphone 5 better or the samsung galaxy s3?
Q. I am due to get a new phone but cant really decide which one to get! I have been using the android system for quite a while and seem to like it...but i would love something new. I am also doubting the size of the galaxy and wondering if the size is just too big for my small hands! ha I have also been hearing that the Galaxy works much better and has much better screen resolution...but honestly which phone would be the the better one for me to get?

A. A very hard question to answer as both of these are very solid choices, but each user will tell you a different answer. Both phones has its up and downs. Here's my take: The Samsung Galaxy S III has a larger display and Android ecosystem with addition to some cool features like S Beam, NFC, etc. The iPhone 5 has a much better build quality, smoother operation UI and a slightly better camera. If cost is a big factor, the price difference between the two is quite significant. Check out some Comparisons on Youtube to help make your decision. Can't go wrong with either choices though.

What smartphone has the best instant messenger and is the best for texting?
Q. Which smartphone do you recommend as being the best? How good is samsung galaxy s3 with texting and instant messenger? What are the main differences between samsung galaxy s2 and s3?

A. If you really like then Black berry is great. Almost every smartphone has apps so you can IM easily.

Difference is clear, actually Galaxy S3 is a new phone with some cool new features like eye tracking, fast access to camera with motion sensor etc. And also it has some hardware changes. But when you are totally concerned with texting, you won't feel any difference. Because both runs on Android you won't feel *great* differences in user interface. Because Galaxy s3 is old, probably you'll see some changes in on-screen keyboard, and word suggestion is also great but at the end both will be same almost . You can also make Samsung Galaxy S2 texting a lot better with some Third party apps which can be downloaded from the google play store.

How do I get the addresses in my contacts from Yahoo to sync with my android incredible phone?
Q. I am able to download the contacts to my android phone from my yahoo contacts but it doesn't add the addresses to the contacts. How can I get the addresses to transfer to my phone?

A. If you download the Yahoo Mail or Yahoo Messenger app (forget which one) from the Market, then your Yahoo contact should show up in your phone's address book. However, last time I checked this sync is one-way only, you cannot edit Yahoo contacts from Android's Address Book (must do it from browser). If you want two-way sync, you need to move your Address Book to Google Contacts or contact Yahoo and ask them to implement this in their app.

Is it possible to uninstall an Android software update after you update?

Q. I have an HTC Inspire 4G, and I was wondering, if I don't like the update to Android Gingerbread from Android Froyo (2.2), if I could possibly go back to my original Android software (2.2). Also, does Android save all the contacts, even if they are stored on the phone, to my google account?

A. You should be able to go in to recovery mode and restore the backed up ROM that was on the phone before the update. Just read your manual on how to boot into the recovery mode or find your phone's forum posts on XDA or CyanogenMod and see how it's done.

Why does my android froyo look different?
Q. I have the droid 2 and it says that I am running android 2.2 froyo, but when I look at some of the other phones running this operating system, the look very different, even from juste the unlock screen. Is there a reason for that? Just curious!

Also does anyone know when the droid 2 will be getting gingerbread?

A. They may be slightly different versions of the OS. I'm not familiar with Windows Mobile or whatever Droid uses (although those phones are pretty badass), but chances are you just have different settings or a slightly updated version. Maybe even an just a different theme, or it came with awkward install settings.

Unless you mean your phone physically looks different. In which case I am guessing you have a different phone.

how do i network my tablet , computer and tv wirelessly?

Q. my friend has all the mac stuff. and has all his stuff hooked up wireless. so he can use his tv as the computer screen. or run netflix through his ipad and the movie pops up on the tv kind of like the ipad is being used as a remote. if im not mistaken i think he uses mac airplay. is there something similar i can use that is android/windows?

A. Apple has some propriety apps/protocols that their devices can use to work together on a network, but you can do most of the same functions with other systems and a regular wireless network. You'll just need a wireless router that you can connect all of your devices to so that they can access the Internet. A wireless-N router would be best and would provide the longest lifespan in terms of speeds since it's the latest WiFi revision out.

Once your iPad is connected to the WiFi you can use the Netflix app to stream movies to it, or watch Hulu, etc. Same with your TV, game console, etc.

Tablet for power points in class and once in awhile productivity?
Q. Talk about first world problems but I've been really struggling with what tablet I should choose. I'd like to use a tablet in class for reviewing lecture slides as the professor goes along as well as creating simple spreadsheets (although the more functionality the better) for when I'm in research. The ability to present a power point would also be great. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FFa5YGPVIs)

The options (in my mind):
1. Nexus 10
2. Microsoft Surface
3. IPad 4

Nexus 10 likes:
High res display
best internal hardware
100 dollars cheaper when purchased from google play
can probably get away with doing all the tasks of the other two..and is 100 dollars cheaper.

dislikes:
Not a champ for productivity
poorer battery life than almost any competitor.

M Surface:
Nice hardware
10.6" screen (I feel like bigger the better for productivity and I really like the added size) but still about as light as the others.
Lots of additional functionality like a file system, Microsoft office RT, USB support
would be nice to support Microsoft for once.

Dislikes:
outdated hardware (Tegra 3 processor)
probably would need the expensive cover/keyboard which I'm not sure I'd like to type on.

Ipad Likes:
Obvious benefits of greatest app selection, new great hardware, Airplay for apple tv.
Resale value.

Dislikes:
I really don't like being locked into Macs selection of apps. I feel like they are trying to limit my world and the content I view. They don't allow developers to use any SDK other than theirs for new web browsers and I just don't trust them.
_______________________________
So if you had to buy one of these tablets with your own money, for productivity purposes, which would you buy?

A. if you want a tablet that has full laptop functionality then you should
get the Microsoft surface RT
it really is an amazing tablet
it has a 10.6" screen with very good and high resolution
colors look clear and sharp on it
the tablet build quality is amazing
it feels perfect and its made from solid materials
the os on the tablet which is windows 8 is also amazing
its fast and fluid and also simple and easy to use
its made with touch in mind
the web browser is extremely good its fast and pages load up quickly
and it supports flash which is a huge plus and which is something that is lacking on most android tablets and all ios tablets
battery life is very good and would easily get you through more than 10 hours of heavy use
you can download apps from the windows marketplace which has many high quality apps
thousands of apps are being added everyday
more than 2000 apps were added in less than 2 days
it does have more than 40,000 apps now and like I said it will keep on increasing
it has dual cameras and both of them take amazing photos and videos
it has deep social network integration(skype, facebook, twitter, linkedin and so on)
you also get Microsoft office 2013 for free on it
and if you get the keyboard and attach it to it you'll have a laptop
overall the surface is an amazing tablet and you should get it
hope i helped :)

choosing between the ipad and galaxy tab?
Q. okay well for starts i used to be a apple fanboy untill my iphone got stolen and i started using an old galaxy nexus smartphone. completely in love with the andriod operating system, the fact that there's so much more room to customize is amazing. also the iphone being to 'restricted' in terms of the whole bluetooth and the fact that downloading certain files is non existent.
i want to buy a tablet of some sort to use for skyping, facebook, youtube and internet surfing here and there. i hear the galaxy tab is far superior then the ipad but the fact that my home theatre system has the feature airplay and correct me if im wrong here but thats only compatible with apple products.
If i were to buy and ipad it'd be the ipad 2 and to the contrary id get the galaxy tab 10.1 (both 16gb)
if i get a galaxy tab is there a way to controll my home theatre and tv?

A. You may be able to connect to an AirPlay system...

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zappotvapple&hl=en

but being Android there is no guarantee that it will work for your particular set up. As you seem to be content just customising your devices rather than actually doing anything useful a Galaxy Tab will be ideal for you.

If I get an AppleTV, Can I use AirPlay to stream Netflix, HBO Go, Hulu Plus and Blockbuster @Home from my iPad?
Q. to my HDTV?

A. yes, but if you get a google tv bluray player (more specifically the Sony NSZ-GT1) it will do that and so much more, including a fully functional web browser, stocked android market, and yes, airplay ( with $0.99 Airtight App). I have them both and my apple tv is pretty much obsolete

How do i set up the Android SDK?

Q. Hi, I want to start developing apps on the Google Android platform but I do not know how to set the SDK up. Can anyone give me a step-by-step guide?

A. After downloading the SDK, unpack the .zip archive to a suitable location on your machine. By default, the SDK files are unpacked into a directory named android_sdk_<platform>_<release>_<build>. The directory contains a link to a local copy of the documentation and the subdirectories tools/, samples/, and others.

Make a note of the name and location of the unpacked SDK directory on your system you will need to refer to the SDK directory later, when setting up the Android plugin or using SDK tools.

Optionally, you can add the path to the SDK tools directory to your path. As mentioned above, the tools/ directory is located in the SDK directory.

In the home directory locate the .bash_profile and locating the PATH variable add the location to your $SDK_ROOT/tools folder.

Adding tools to your path lets you run Android Debug Bridge (adb) and the other command line tools without needing to supply the full path to the tools directory. Note that, if you update your SDK, you should remember to update your PATH settings to point to the new location, if different.

Is there a way to resize android app ?
Q. Is there a way to resize android app ?
From one res to another ? Say from quarter HD to a smaller resolution ? (Not a developer , What I mean is to resize apps meant for quarter high definition to smallers)

I will choose a best answer.

A. Its just like changing resolution of a PC game. ;)

Now Tools you need.....

Latest version of JDK (Java Development Kit) (Search Google)

Apk Manager. (Search Google)

Now extract Apk Manager. Folder will be created (Apk_Manager_5.0)

Now In that folder you can see (place-apk-here-for-modding)

Put the apk you want to port in that. Now open Script.bat.

You will get messege ADB was not found ( Maybe). Press enter... x)

Type 22 and press enter for selecting your project. Now select which project you want to work by typing its number and enter.

OK now type 9 (Decompile apk) and press enter. It will take some time.

Now When work is done minize apk manager.

Example you are porting N.O.V.A (So your project is ready in folder (Apk-Manager-5.0 \ projects \ and NOVA.apk)

Go to Apk-Manager-5.0 \ projects \ and NOVA.apk \ Smali \ com \ gameloft \ android keep opening till you reach some txt files.

Now find Gamerenderer.smali or NOVArenderer.smali

Now scroll down deep and find (getWidth()I and getHeight()I)

Now First lets do work on Width (There is a line after Landroid/view/Display;->getWidth()I)

Something like const/4 v1, 0x1 , Change this to const/4 v1, 0x320 (Just change 0x1 to 0x320)

Now lets work on Height (There is a line after Landroid/view/Display;->getHeight()I)

Something like const/2 v2, 0x1 , Change this to const/2 v2, 0x1E0 (Just Change 0x1 to 0x1E0)

Save it.

Now open the Apk Manager Window you minimized. Type 11 and press enter to compile apk.

Now an apk will be created in project folder. Move it to (place-apk-here-for-signing) folder.

Type 12 and press entre to Sign Apk.

There is no need to change cache.

Voilaaaa.......

Game resolution is changed to HVGA .......... Hahahahahahahaha

(Note : It will only change resolution of ARM V6 optimized games)

There is a program called (IDA pro) which could optimize V7 games to V6 processors. (But it costs hell of money)

Also it will only change resolution of games not RAM usage.

All games which were playable on Samsung Galaxy Ace are already ported.

No further Gameloft Games are playable on Ace because of RAM usage.

I tried so many games but all uses too much RAM and two vibrates and force close.

I hope you get the IDEA of how developers port Games to HVGA.

I made these steps Damn simple that a small KID can understand.

How can I root my android?
Q. I have a lg p500 that runs on android 2.2 froyo and i'm trying to root it. Are there any apps that will root my android safely? What will brick it? Are there any ways to avoid bricking my phone?

A. hey i too had an optimus one.ROOTING will void the WARRANTY .okay leaving the warranty aside :P .....to root p500 ensure u r on gingerbread because gingerbread has a newer baseband and many roms only support the newer one. easy way of rooting is to use 'superoneclick'. it is a free software and u can find it by googling superoneclick. install the software on your computer. open it using admin privileges. connect your mobile. make sure all the 'adb' drivers are installed on your computer. click root option in superoneclick and wait till it says OK, finished. your mobile will switch off in this process. power it on and u must find an app called superuser in ur app list, this means u r rooted. for further confirmation download root checker from the market. for more details http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1200167. the first 4 steps r actually not necessary but for safety, go by them. happy rooting!

How to install apps to Android SDK?
Q. Is there a way to install apps to this android emulator?

A. it's actually very simple
1) note the location of the app (.apk file)
2) in a cmd console - go to the directory where you have extracted the android SDK to (if you do not have the sdk, download it from http://developer.android.com/sdk/1.5_r1/index.html and extract it)
3) go to the tools directory
4) type 'adb install app.apk' where app.apk is the name of the application you want to install

Is it safe to view and trade my stocks on my phone?

Q. I have the android Galaxy Nexus, just wondering how secure it is. For instance if I get the scottrade app and want to trade stocks with that will it be safe? When I'm connected to an open wifi can people steal the information off my phone and steal my stock and along with it my credit card information?

A. open wifi, no. its not hard at all to monitor traffic in an open network with, say, wireshark. im sure scotttrade uses encrypted packets (fun fact, facebook does not, easy passwords there) but there is still stuff you might want to keep to your self. i would trust the 4g in the phone over a open network.

A. The app might protect you some.. I don't know it. Read the specifics on your ScottTrade app.

Generally, if you are using an open WiFi access point, then anyone around you.. and especially the folks who set up the access point ( do you know them?) .. can monitor and even record anything moving in or out of that access point.

Phones also have bluetooth commonly turned on.. this is another possible way to hack info from your phone.

BUT.. this is probably (almost) as safe as using a laptop on a network. The site should be HTTPS (secured web page), so there is encryption there.
If you use good- strong passwords;
don't share them;
don't use the same password for your mail, stocks and bank accounts
if you keep an eye on your finances .. check every line of each transaction
and keep an eye on your phone usage

then you can minimize the risks.

You should be able to use some kind of two-factor authentication with your bank and with ScottTrade. Two-factors, meaning if you want to make a sizeable change in your investment stance (you set the threshold) , then they put the transaction through - but hold it pending a confirmation. That can be a phone call, you give them a verbal PIN, maybe they need to call a separate number or you need to answer a text message with a code..
The first authentication is you getting on the website with your password.
The second authentication should be something that isn't going to be in or in your phone.

I also suggest getting a security program ( like - but maybe not exactly Norton's) that allows you to remotely erase the phone if you lose it.
Then --- backup your data, and practice the emergency erase once or twice so you see how it works.. and you get to see how good your data backups are.

Is there a way to download A flash player on to my lg optimus smartphone?
Q. I was led to believe there was 1 pre installed on this phone Because of the 2.2 android system. Most of my apps require a flash player when having to do with any video applications . I am admittedly dumb when it comes to smartphones. But I still need a flash player. Please somebody help somebody save me...

Thank you, slap happy smart I am not

.

A. I have this phone and its really dumb but the phone doesn't support flash player and theres no app in the android market for it. What I do is download videos off of youtube using realplayer and convert them to .avi and then use the USB to put it on my phone. If you need further help call 1-800-243-0000. And theres an update for the phone Android 2.2.1.

Will there ever be a flash player that works on android ?
Q. I've had android for bout 2 years an there was a brief moment when flash player worked.

A. any device running Android 2.2 or above has full flash support

I have also had a android phone for about 2 years, and have been running flash apps and websites all this time.

How to install flash player on galaxy ace?
Q. I have a galaxy ace and I want to install adobe flash player on it. I tried it many times and I downloaded it many times. But it didny work. I need it very much. Please help.

A. Do you have the correct version of Android?
Because (Adobe) Flash Player requires an Android version of 1.4.1 (or something, I don't know by heart, you should look it up) or higher.
If your Android-system is lower than that version, you cannot download it.

So,
1- You install the newest version of Android-system.
2- If you cannot install the newest version because it's not able to run on your phone, then too bad, no flash player for you ;) (sad, but true..)

how does this bar code work on android phones?

Q. on my laptop theres a sticker that says ''satellite l645d, scan this qr code with your smartphone''. what do i need to download to do this (i have a htc aria) and what will i be able to do after i do?

A. You should have Google Goggles already installed on your phone.
Tap the Goggles app to open it and it uses your camera to take a picture of and analyze the code, it will then give you info about the code you are scanning.

Preferably a free android app :)

Do any of the battery saver apps really work?

Q. I just got the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and I was wondering if any of the battery saver apps really work and if so which is the best? Thanks for your help.

A. Most of them are bull****. Most are just fancy-looking task killers (which are NOT needed) combined with a easy-settings (turn off WiFi, Bluetooth, etc.) screen.

There are only a few "real" ways to save power

1) smarter screen brightness timeout -- your screen takes up like 50% or so power. Apps like Screebl takes your phone's orientation into account so if the phone's face down it'll timeout immediately.

2) smarter timeout of WiFi, 3G, and so on -- Juice Defender will disable WiFi, 3G, and so on based on schedule, app, and so on. The free version doesn't have advanced settings. The full version will let you go down to specific app (this app will turn on 3G, that app won't...)

This is my little explanation on what you need to do to save power, and whether these apps work.

What happened to the vibration of my Android Y?
Q. Whenever I saved images on my Android Y, it would vibrate. Like for example, when I hold down on the image, it would vibrate as the options of what you could do to the image pops up. Now, it doesn't. I have a feeling it's because of my battery saver thing, but yeah - how do I get it back to vibrate again? Weird question, but it would be great if you could answer this. Thank you! :)

A. IT DOES THAT. CONTACT THE ANDROID SUPPORT

What is the chance of bricking your android?
Q. I am thinking about rooting my phone but I am afraid that it will get bricked. All I'm will use it for is the really get some of the apps off the market like battery saver stuff. But how many people actually brick there phone and if I did would there be any way to fix it

A. you can side load apps with out rooting your device.. just click allow install from unknown sources then download the APK file for the app you want from a site like http://www.handango.com/Home.jsp?siteId=2218

How to develop a web developing Android app?

Q. I need to develop an android app that can create simple web page. In this app users are prompted to input some details for pages like "About us", "Contact us". I need some tutorials if there are any.

A. I don't know this will be suitable for you but i have tried making the Justdial application for Android mobile. Please check the below link and check the view source code. You will get all the details you require.

How to load Android app I built myself onto my phone?
Q. I build a simple Android app that runs now in the emulator in eclipse. How now do I install it on my phone? The phone is a HTC Magic if that is relevant.

A. developer.android.com should have all the info you need to run your app on your phone. But in short, once you create your app and .apk file using android adt, sdk and eclipse, you will basically move the .apk file to your android phone or tablet (enable third party software installs under settings==> application before you do this) and then click it to install. Well done and best of luck with your android programming. See you on the other side :)

Is there an Android app that will keep placing a call until someone answers?
Q. I was just wondering if there is an Android app out there that will place a phone call for you until someone answers? Like if you keep calling someone and the line is busy, it would continue to call until someone picks up? It might be helpful to get thru to a radio station that's holding a contest. Does something like that exist?

A. Of course :)

What do I need to make applications for android phones?

Q. I already know how to program in Flash, Java, and the basics of c++. I was looking for an internship for the summer, and failed. So I thought I would teach myself how to make applications for the android phones. So what do I need to get started?
Ok thanks jaffamol. I am downloading eclipse now. Before I was using JGrasp as a IDE(for java).

A. You will need:

Java Development Kit (and JRE, which most people have anyway) : http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

Android SDK : http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html

The best IDE EVER! Eclipse : http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/download.php?file=/technology/epp/downloads/release/galileo/SR2/eclipse-java-galileo-SR2-win32.zip

ADT plugin for Eclipse : http://developer.android.com/sdk/eclipse-adt.html

That's what you need to get started, this will give you an IDE to develop in and emulators to test with.

Get started with a guide to Android development : http://developer.android.com/guide/index.html

-------------------------------------------------------------
No problem, I find Eclipse much better than anything else, and it's recommended for Android development. You could use other IDE's but Android has a plugin for Eclipse which will give you things like, intellisense, easily debug applications in the emulator, easily export unsigned and signed applications, easily view all threads, memory and all that lovely stuff.

What does it take to make a smartphone APP?
Q. Like apps for iPhone and Android. What knowldge do I need to have to make a quality app? Do different apps use different programming languages or is it all standard? How long would it take before I can make a good app?

A. To make a smartphone app, you firstly need a IDE (Integrated Debugging Environment). Like, to name few, there are: Eclipse, Carbide C++, etc. If you wish to develop you application program in Java, you need to have the JDK7u4.

Then get the SDK (Software Development Kit) for which you want to develop the apps. Like, the Android-SDK for developing the android app. Next thing is that, you will have to be good at your programming skills.

Once you get the proper IDE then download the SDK and run it. Select the option to integrate with the existing IDE.

The rest is self-explanatory. To know more, you can refer to my blog. I have shared the link.

http://developer.android.com/index.html

Then check out the samples from the same website.

A. As far as design goes, the fourth-generation model is noticeably lighter and thinner than previous generations but still maintains a sturdy feel with curved, chromed steel backing. The curve is a bit less pronounced than the second- and third-generation models, allowing it to lay flat without wobbling, but it still maintains a slimmer taper at the edges than the first-generation version. The volume rocker is now split into two separate buttons, however, the profile of the buttons is the same as before. The screen lock button is still at the top, though located on the right as opposed to the left side (a win for lefties, maybe?). The black antenna window on the back is gone. Headphone and dock connections are on the bottom where they've always been, only now they're joined by a small speaker grille slit on the left side of the dock connection.

The big news about the new Touch is the addition of two video cameras--one facing the user and one facing out. The front-facing camera is meant for use with Apple's Facetime video chat app (first unveiled with iPhone 4), as well as any supported third-party apps. With Facetime on the Touch, users can place or receive video calls to both iPhones or other iPod Touch, using an e-mail address, as opposed to a phone number. In my brief demo using Facetime on the Touch, all of the features I've come to expect from the iPhone 4 were present, including the capability to call in portrait or landscape, switch camera views, and pause video transmission while maintaining a voice connection. The feature can be used with a plug-in headset (not included) or simply with the integrated speaker and microphone. For a device that isn't a phone and can be had for as little as $229, I think that Facetime on the iPod Touch is a unique and noteworthy feature.

The rear-facing camera on the Touch is capable of capturing still images and video up to 720p. It is not, however, identical to the camera on the iPhone 4. It uses a different sensor and there's no flash. It's also incapable of working with the new HDR camera feature being rolled out for the iPhone. Still, it's a welcome addition and opens the door to many more apps and uses.

Under the hood, you have a ton of features carried over from iPhone 4. The processor is the same A4 chip as the iPhone. There's an integrated gyroscope now for more fine-grain gaming control. The Wi-Fi antenna now supports 802.11n at 2.4GHz. And last, but not least, the LCD is the same 3.5-inch "retina" display used on the iPhone 4, sporting a 960x640 resolution.

All that screen resolution comes in handy with Apple's new 99-cent HD TV rentals, which are compatible with the Touch.

With the Optimus it: * Runs the latest version of Android, 2.2
* Responsive capacitive touchscreen
* Cheap
* Packed with smart-phone features

Bad

* Low-resolution screen
* Ugly LG software icons
* Looks boring
* No Flash support

Budget Android handsets are getting so good that it's making us all tingly. The LG Optimus One P500 is available now for free on the low contract price of £20 per month, which means it will soon become even cheaper. It's also available for £250 SIM-free. For those prices, you'll get nine-tenths of the great features of Android 2.2, the latest version of Google's mobile operating system.
Android hit with the ugly stick

The Optimus One isn't the best-looking budget smart phone (check out the HTC Wildfire for a budget Android phone that looks the business). But it's not hideous either. It's just rather plasticky. We like the clicky physical buttons on the front, despite their ugly chrome trim, because they're easier to use than the touch-sensitive kind that are popping up with increasing frequency.

We could go on and on endlessly about the great features of Android, but we'll limit ourselves to giving just a few examples. Its email support is excellent, offering the ability to add all your accounts, including Outlook email using Microsoft Exchange. There's a separate email client if you use Gmail or Google Apps, and Android supports multiple accounts too.

Android is Google's mobile OS, so it's no surprise that Google services are the best part of this phone. Google Maps has advanced features that you won't find on non-Android phones, such as support for My Maps and layers. Google has also released plenty of good apps in the Android Market, which you can download and install for free. We love Google Listen, a podcasting app that downloads your favourite podcasts over Wi-Fi, and Google Sky Map, which will appeal to star gazers.

If your into gaming go apple ipod!

Android LG Optimus S software Q?
Q. I have a LG Optimus S which runs the Android platform on the Sprint network. I just installed the Launcher PRO on my cell and i like the new look and how it runs. I've tried to do my homework but can't find the answers to the questions I'm about to ask. Some more info I don't want to try things then have to reset it to its factory settings as my cell doesn't have an activate Sprint service and I can't find a way to back up my Sprint ID. If I were to mess up my cell and did reset it I would not be able to get past the Sprint ID screen because you can only download Sprint ID when on a Sprint Network which i don't have =/. Anyways I'm about to root my cell in a few days and I was wondering:
1) If I uninstall the original Launcher will it mess up my cell even if I keep the L' PRO? Is it even possible to uninstall the original Launcher?
2) If I uninstall the Sprint Icon Pack will it mess anything else up on my cell or what does this actually control on my cell?
3) Has anyone actually uninstall the Sprint ID off of their Android? What site has the best instructions for you or what helped you the most to do this?

I think I covered most of my basics so if anyone knows about Androids I would really appreciate it it a lot! =)

Internet on android problem?
Q. I have just got a 150 mb pack/month...
If i allow data transfer, a icon with a H and two arrows appears on the top of my screen.
After 2 minutes without any browsing i checked how much internet i had left----- about 140 mb!
My question is why???
I have around 20 apps...But i have signed out from both skipe and yahoo.
What can i do?!?!

A. 150mb is not going to be very fun to deal with unless you can leech wifi in most locations. Have you checked for any open wifi networks wherever you are at?

There are several things that can be using data. Hard to tell what it is. You can install a Widget that shows you how much data you transfer. I would probably install one of those widgets.

How well do psx and n64 emulators run on the Motorola Flipout?
Q. It is a small device and doesn't have such a powerful processor as many other android phones.

Has anyone tried it? Would they run smooth?

Thanks :)

A. Yes, very well running! Go for these emulators!

Good luck!

Will there be a Nintendo64 emulator for iPhone and iPod Touches?
Q. n64iphone was crap and doesn't work anymore. android smartphones have a good n64 emulator and its not fair for us iphone users. will there actually be any good n64 emulator for the apple users in the future? :P

A. ZodTTD, the hacker that released n64iphone as well as a handful of other emulators hasn't been updating his site too much lately. He claimed he would have n64ipad, a full screen n64 emulator "in the coming weeks" and that was in July. To answer your question, I'm not really sure. I might try to potentially make one myself, but I don't really know too much about how that'll play out. Hope this helps.

What is the best ebook reader?
Q. I am thinking of getting an ebook reader for the new year. Can anyone give me their opinions/experience with any of the readers out there. I am trying to get a good one at an affordable price but need more info to decide on the right one. I know the Kindle and Nook are very popular, what do you all think?

A. Hi, Princess Yoda, when choosing an eReader, you need to consider not only the physical properties of the device, but also compare eBook stores behind it. Sony has never been a contender for any comparison by anyone as they only have like 5 books in their Ebook store and their devices are way overpriced for what they offer. Borders is behind Kobo/Cruz devices in US and as you might of heard, Borders is on a brink of bankruptcy. Kindle and Nook are the only devices to be considered as their eBook stores have over a million of free public ebooks as well as over a million of ebooks that you need to pay for available.
Having that out of the way, you should then decide which screen you want: e-Ink or LCD. It depends on what you're reading. If just black & white novels then the better one would be Kindle or e-Ink Nook from Barnes & Noble. If you read electronic magazines or college text books with a lot of color graphs and charts or childrens' books with a lot of pictures then the better would be Nook Color LCD from Barnes & Noble. Then, you should understand the limitations of e-Ink eReaders - they are limited to be black & white for now they "blink" at each ebooks page turn, they're not too good for web browsing, they need external light source for reading when dark, and they cannot handle videos.
Whichever device you choose, here's the advantages of the Nooks (both e-Ink black & white and Nook Color) over Kindle:
- Any Barnes & Noble store provides free Wi-Fi to Nook's
- Nook allows to lend Nook books for two weeks to friends and family or share with your other devices that run B&N app (PC, MAC, Android phones, Apple iPhone, iPod and iPad, etc.) Barnes & Noble allows (when you walk in with the Nook to B&N store) to read any available eBook for free while in the store via free provided in the store Wi-Fi. With Nook, while in BN store you get exclusive articles from top authors, and great offers including cafe treats and unique deals.
- Nook (unlike Kindle) can be used for library ebooks.
- Nook (unlike Kindle) can be used for renting text-ebooks.
Nook Color is worth mentioning separately as this is a hybrid Android eReader/tablet device, something between Kindle and iPad. Even though Nook Color has LCD touchscreen, it's a new generation screen which is anti-glare coated and is better performing in sunlight and produces less glare all of which are dooming reading on iPad. Also, the screen is amazing and readable/viewable at wide angles.
Overall, Nook Color is more than e-Reader as you can also watch video and use Android applications on it. It's a hybrid device, much more than just an e-Reader but not a full tablet as it doesn't have a camera. If all you want is to read novels, Kindle (or the original e-Ink Nook) might be better for you. If you want something more from your device (color graphs and charts of college text books, childrens books, photos and videos, web sites in full color) at half of the price of iPad or Galaxy tab, then Nook Color is your best bet.
Nook Color has several apps that already come with the device (Pandora Internet radio, QuickOffice, etc.) Also, Barnes & Noble recently released Nook SDK and Nook Developer platform that will allow most of the existing 100,000 Android apps be ported to it. Also, you can use the Social Settings screen to link your NOOK Color to your Facebook account and your Twitter account. You can also import all your contacts from your Google Gmail account. Once you have linked to Facebook and Twitter and set up email contacts, you can lend and borrow books, recommend books, and share favorite quotes with your friends.

What is the best ebook reader out there?
Q. I want to get an ebook reader for Christmas so I was just wondering which ebook reader is the best one out there. I'm not really looking for anything too expensive and I'm just looking for a simple ebook. I don't want an ebook with tons of other functions.

I'd like one that's less than $200.
I also want to know what you're opinion on the Nook Color and Kindle 3 and which one you like the best.

A. Forget Kindle or Kobo, it's so last year. Get Nook (3G or Wi-Fi) or or Nook Color (Wi-Fi) from bn.com or any Barnes & Noble physical store or BestBuy or Walmart. 3G means the internet connection is included for free for the life of the device thus you can download a new book even when you're walking on the street. Wi-Fi means that you need to have access to wireless hotspot - one example would be any Barnes & Noble store that provide free Wi-Fi to Nook's or at your home. There's over a million of free public ebooks as well as over a million of ebooks that you need to pay for available through Barnes & Noble eBook store. Prices are generally much lower than for physical books.
Nook wins.
- Nook allows to lend books for 2 weeks to friends or to your other devices that run B&N app. Barnes & Noble allows (when you walk in with the Nook to B&N store) to read any available eBook for free while in the store via free provided in the store Wi-Fi. With Nook, while in BN store you get exclusive articles from top authors, and great offers including cafe treats and unique deals.
- Nook Color is better as a color e-Reader than Kindle simply because it has color and Kindle is black and white. Content that greatly benefits from color - such as kids books and magazines - looks much better and sharper on Nook Color's screen.
- Nook Color is better as an e-Reader in general than iPad. It has a new generation screen which is anti-glare coated and is better performing in sunlight than iPad's. Also, as it's smaller in size than iPad, the text appears sharper on Nook's screen. Also it has 12,000 (more soon) kids books that are built as a game with feedback.
- Nook Color has been picked as the editors choice by PC Magazine while pro reviewers of other sites (CNET, ZDNet, Engadget, AllThingsDigital, etc.) mentioned that it tested to be pretty fast for apps and PDF's, and has a beautiful screen.
- Overall, Nook Color is more than e-Reader as you can also watch video and use Android applications on it. It's a hybrid device, much more than just an e-Reader but not a full tablet as it doesn't have a camera. If all you want is to read novels, Kindle (or the original e-Ink Nook) might be better for you. If you want something more from your device at half of the price of iPad or Galaxy tab, then Nook Color is your best bet.
- Nook (unlike Kindle) can be used for library ebooks.
- Nook (unlike Kindle) can be used for renting text-ebooks.
