What should I get for christmas and my birthday?

Q. since both are coming up, i get one big present for each. so pick two :)
a new laptop since mine has a lot of problems and is probably going to break soon.
a new ipod- my current one has a really bad battery life & i want the touch that has a camera.
a dslr camera because i am taking photography class and i want one.
a nook or kindle just because.
don't preach to me about Jesus, i am not religious.
and one is for my birthday, they both aren't for Christmas.

Are all ebooks compatible with all ereaders?
Q. I just recieved a MID ereader with wifi and an android market. What I am wanting to know is how do I download books to my ereader? I have internet access on my ereader if that makes a difference.

A. From what I am reading online about it, the answer is no. Look in the Owner's Manual for the specific formats that your ereader can read. From what I can see the formats are PDF (this is the Adobe Acrobat Reader format), RTF and EPUB (Adobe Digital Editions). Any ebooks that you want to read using the reader should bear those extensions, i.e. BeautyandtheBeast.rtf or BeautyandtheBeast.epub or BeautyandtheBeast.pdf. The extension of the document (the last 3 letters after the dot) is what will tell you what specific format a document is.

For downloading directly to it via wifi from an ebook store that has Android apps available, like Barnes and Noble or Sony, you need to have the app uploaded and installed in your tablet. You also will need to open an account with the corresponding ebook store you want to connect to using your gadget, in order to be able to purchase books from them.

From the info I can see, I don't know if you can connect the gadget for synchronization with your computer system, whatever it is. If you are able to, you will likely be able to upload books that are stored in your computer system, provided they are in the appropriate formats.


Can Literati Wireless Readers support Amazon eBooks?
Q. My friend just bought a Literati Wireless Reader and has been trying to download some of the eBooks she bought from Amazon onto it. She hasn't had any success so far so I was wondering if the Literati will even support those eBooks. Any help would be really appreciated.

Additional information. The eBooks are all veterinary medical textbooks.

A. From what I can see, the Literati is powered by Kobo, not Amazon (Kindle). This means the format is incompatible. Also, she can not connect to the Amazon store using a Literati. The only solutions to this would be:

1. To buy a Kindle ebook reader or a reader that supports uploading of the Kindle app to it i.e. Blackberry, iPad tablet, or Android based tablet.

2. Read the books via the Kindle app downloaded and installed to her PC or laptop.

3. To download the Amazon (Kindle) ebooks, strip the DRM from the books, convert to a format the Literati can read (epub or pdf basically), and then upload to the Literati or ebook reading device of her choice via her computer.


Is there any way to remove the DRM from iTunes ePub (ebook) files?
Q. I know Calibre plugins work for most other file types but is there any way at all to strip the DRM protection from iTunes epub files. I really want to convert the ebook to pdf so I can print it and I even bought it legit (for a change).

If not, is there a way to print it at least?

Can an android tablet be booted from a usb port?
Q. I was wondering if I can run one of those light weight linux distro installed on a usb flash drive on one of those android tablets.
1) Is there a cheap tablet PC (under $200) that can be booted from a usb port?
3) Can I find a lightweight linux distro that has all the drivers for that tablet?

A. First of all, Android is Linux. It's a custom Linux kernel with a special software layer on top. And the customizations to the kernel and the software layer sitting on top of it are pretty important for it to run on the rather specialized smartphone architecture.

Second, a kernel has to be compiled to run on a certain architecture. So you'd have to find a version of Linux compiled for an ARM processor. That's not much of a problem. Several distributions, including Ubuntu, have ARM kernels. But then you'd have to have kernel modules for the drivers of the smartphone hardware, which... isn't nearly as likely. And you'd probably need a specially-designed interface, since Gnome or KDE really wouldn't work on a 4-inch touchscreen. And all of that would also have to be specially compiled for the kernel. And that's before we start with the application software. And by the time you got all of that working... you'd essentially have Android.

And even if you could do all of that, you'd have to have some way of booting from the USB, which you can't since smartphone firmware boots the kernel directly, without any sort of bootloader like you have on a personal computer.

If you want Android to be more Linux-y -- whatever that means, since the Linux experience differs greatly based on the graphical interface (assuming you use one) -- you can install a terminal emulator and even the bash shell. If you play around with it a bit, you might be able to install some command-line Linux software. But even then, it wouldn't be terribly useful, given the limited ability to enter text on a smartphone.

A. The easiest way to start is to grab a USB OTG adapter. If you can't (or don't want to get one), find a female USB A --> microUSB cable. On this cable, open the microUSB side of the adapter and solder pins 4 and 5 of the microUSB port together.
When you have your USB OTG adapter (or modified microUSB cable) you can then run the commands to load the necessary kernel drivers. Everything here is already on the rooted PlayBook, so you won't need any extra files. The commands are as follows:

slay io-usb
slay devb-umass
sleep 2
RIM_usbmgr-Winchester -m0s
io-usb -domap4430-mg ioport=0x4a0ab000,irq=124

The only line you really need to pay attention to is the last one as it shows where the flash drive will be mounted after it's connected. You can specify different mount points for different partitions by separating them with comas (in the example here hd6t6 and hd6 are shown).

Q. I was wondering if it is possible to upgrade to an android phone on T-mobile when I have a talk and text plan? Would it work if I had them disable T-mobile Internet access on the phone?

A. sorry android phones require internet service to function correctly and t-mobile requires you have data on the plan if you upgrade at the discounted rate. If you want an android phone then be prepared to pay for the data package.


can you download the android market on non-android phones?

A. Unfortunately, no. For starters, Android Market is designed for Android phones. Therefore, it has to be an Android phone to work. Second of all, the Android Market installer itself is a .apk file which only Android phones can execute. Other phones can't execute these type of files.

It sounds like the Android phone has computer apps on it. When you apply for a scholarship, you usually have to write an essay. Type a generic essay and save it to your computer. E-mail it to yourself, and then you will have it to download to a scholarship application. It would be nice if you could edit the essay by using your phone. Then, you could alter each essay to fit the scholarship.

How did my android phone calendar appointments make it to my iPad?
Q. I use a GalaxySII android phone and put all my appointments on my phone's calendar. I updated my first generation iPad to IOS5 last week. This morning, I noticed that all my android phone calendar items are now on my iPad calendar. I do not think I did any 'sync' set ups between my phone and iPad (maybe I did something inadvertently). Does anyone know how this sync happened? I don't mind it, just wondering how it works. Thanks for your help!

Go to your Google mail account on line, import or update all your contacts, and that's it. They will automatically be synced over the data connection to the phone. Any changes you make on the phone or the online account will sync with the other automatically.

This also occurs with Google mail and calendars.

A. First of all, when you say "the Geocaching website" I'm going to assume you mean Geocaching.com...

The official Geocaching app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.groundspeak.geocaching seems to be the best one out there, but it costs $10.

I use "c:geo - opensource" https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cgeo.geocaching and it works reasonably well, but sometimes the caches don't show up in the exact right spot on the map... but when that happens at least it shows you that the location may be off (circles it in orange). And there's also a workaround for the issue, so it's not that big of a deal. Bottom line: this app will be fine if you want to save money, but if you don't mind the $10, the official app is better.

How to stop my tablet from being recognized as a mobile device?
Q. I recently perchased the Toshiba thrive tablet and when I try to use websites like grooveshark.com, it recognizes the tablet as a mobile device and makes you pay for using the site. How to send myself a message one year from now?

What is the difference between an iPhone 4s and a Samsung Galaxy S?
Q. My dad has a Galaxy S but i want a iPhone 4s and he keeps asking me whats the difference. I really not sure about the difference about it so can you guys tell me some important differences. and do you recommend the iPhone 4s? and remember my dad has a GALAXY S not a galaxy s2

A. Even thou your father have a Galaxy Si which is pretty awesome, he will be amaze of the iPhone 4s. At least the Galaxy Sii have a dual core system, which makes it faster then the original Si.
The main difference is the firmware, Apple's iPhone 4s runs on IOS, it has been proven that as of today Siri is the best voice command out there. The apps in the apps store are a bit cheaper than the one in Android market. It is easier to sync with iTune, iPhone does not run flash player. It comes with iCloud, which is use to save photo, contacts, files, etc... and have it back up in any other iDevice or iTune which have the same Apple id. You don't have to buy an sd card for the iPhone since it already come in 16, 32 or 64 gb. of storage. And the iPhone is faster than the Galaxy Si. Good luck.

Which Android from Verizon Wireless is the best out of the three?
Q. Droid Incredible, Droid X, & Droid 2?

A. They are pretty similar. The droid 2 has a physical keyboard so is better for texting and also has the new voice commands and chrome to phone from google. The Droid X has a HDMI out so you can hook it up to your tv if it has a HDMI port, it also has hot spot which allows you to send wifi to 5 mobile devices but that costs and extra $20 a month as well as a giant screen. The droid incredible is my favorite it is made by HTC where as the other 2 are made by motorola. You can tell HTC knows what they are doing their widgets are way better and the Sense UI is amazing. The phone is really small and thin where as the other 2 are bigger and the X is really bulky. They all have the same processors and all have pretty good cameras and all are great phones you cant go wrong with any of them.

I already tried updating the OS but I never benn prompted to update my phone from HTC, and I have gone on the site but, I still cant find anything. A. really depends on the wallpaper. The google maps live wall paper uses the internet to get the images for the background, but simple normal wall papers shouldn't

PS it east a lot of battery life so probably don't use it if you are having issues with the battery life.

I have experience on JAVA, C# and PHP and personally prefer to start learning android programming(JAVA), can i find a job in this field or its better to continue .NET and going for SLIVERLIGHT or WCF?

A. If you personally prefer to learn android and/or Java programming then that is what you should pursue.

Having said that, good Silverlight, WCF, and WPF programmers are rare and can still command a great deal of money in the market place. Despite what others have said, Microsoft and .NET are not failing. Plenty of businesses out there looking for good Windows programmers.

A. It's difficult to say without knowing the android version you're running. The "default" keyboard is layed out differently for different versions of android. Also, if you have HTC Sense, Motorola's Motoblur, Samsungs TouchWiz, or any of those other manufacturer's Android variants, then YOUR "default" keyboard is not actually THE "default" keyboard.

To make a long story short... without more detailed information, I can't say for sure where it is. But, for most Android keyboards, there is usually a button with some symbols on it that brings the symbols. If what you're looking for isn't there, there are usually multiple pages of symbols.

P.S. I'm assuming by "star" you mean "asterisk" (this --> * )

A. Hello! Just doing a restore in iTunes will format the phone and put it to apple factory condition. But before doing that you need to make sure she's using the phone on the carrier which it's locked to. Many people are using phones locked to ATT on tMobile by jailbreaking it and unlocking the phone if this is the case, the moment you restore the phone it will only work in the carrier which the phone is locked to. If she doesn't need an unlock in order to use the phone just go ahead and restore it on itunes.

If she has a keylogger installed that means the phone is currently jailbroken allowing you to install anything you want. Immediately after restoring the phone you will no longer have a jailbroken phone so only apple approved apps will be allowed on the phone.

Also keep in mind that an iphone with older basebands have a better resale price than phones with new basebands and whenever you do a factory restore you update the phone to the latest baseband (modem firmware)


When will they have graal online classic on android phones?
Q. there is an app called graal (classic) that is only available on idevices..i was wondering if they were going to make it on android phones?

A. I'm pretty sure it's still in development.On top of that, the Android Marketplace is a rather lack-luster and dry place. Not much money is being made there due to the "open-ness" that is allowed. Granted, I love my Android and would see Graal being there as a totally positive thing, but viewed from a company's point, I can definitely see where it is an abyss of doom and destruction.

Due to the open policy of Androids Marketplace, just about anyone is able to upload and sell an App - which has led to a lot of unregulated apps that turn your phone into a paperweight (viruses, scams, keyloggers, information hacking, etc.). So right now, until Android gets it's act together, I can't say that I PERSONALLY see Graal opening up shop there.

A. Try restarting your phone (factory reset). That could work. I don't know how you can delete it though. Usually you can't delete pre-installed apps.

What android GPS app would be good to use for Geocaching?

Q. I have just joined the Geocaching website. I have a samsung captivate android 2.2 firmware version. I need to know of applications that have a gps that allows you to type in the coordinates numbers, that allow you to play the game. Any suggestions on an easy use app?

A. First of all, when you say "the Geocaching website" I'm going to assume you mean Geocaching.com...

The official Geocaching app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.groundspeak.geocaching seems to be the best one out there, but it costs $10.

I use "c:geo - opensource" https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cgeo.geocaching and it works reasonably well, but sometimes the caches don't show up in the exact right spot on the map... but when that happens at least it shows you that the location may be off (circles it in orange). And there's also a workaround for the issue, so it's not that big of a deal. Bottom line: this app will be fine if you want to save money, but if you don't mind the $10, the official app is better.

The OpenCaching app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.garmin.android.apps.opencache looks pretty good, but it's only for OpenCaching.com


Are emoticons supposed to be animated in the Android version of Yahoo Messenger?
Q. I am using V1.4 of the Android Yahoo Messenger on an HTC EVO and my emoticons are not animated. Is this by design?

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling and the they still do not move...and yes I do know that not all of them are supposed to be animated.

A. Yahoo has some secret emotes for it's on line messenger and I suppose the same is true on Android.

How do you set mobile network on an android tablet?
Q. I got the new Android Tablet The Nextbook for christmas and i added skype but everytime i try to video chat it say mobile network not avaliable. I have wireless internet and a camera on it i looked on every site on the internet and found nothing i need help so how do i fix this or get a mobile network?

A. Hmmm. That's strange. When the Android tablet boots up, is it able to connect to the internet? If it can, then try to reinstall or uninstall Skype. Afterwards, reinstall it, give it a fresh boot and it should work.

How do I make the android internet stay on in sleep mode?

Q. i use my android phone to tether and get internet (easytether app) and even on the longest sleep setting after awhile my android goes into sleep mode and the internet goes off a bit after that. so I was wondering how i can keep the internet on even when it goes into sleep mode. all answers are appreciated

Q. I wanted an i phone, but the prices to use it each month is just too much, so i found the samsung intercept by virgin mobile. I have an Ipod touch, so I was wondering how different is the android market then the apple market? And i checked there website, so i saw a few apps i have on my ipod already so that's good. And does the phone act like the ipod/ iphone?

I had a iphone 2G/3G... and I HATED IT... lost my music during syncs... phone froze after syncs.... i only got 1 wty replacement... i never had ins options...... I dont hate the phone, but more or less the Apple Policies that surround it.... when I pay $199 or whatever for a phone in contract --- I considered it MY PHONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! With Iphone, its not your phone...... your constantly connected to itunes for OS updates and music/app support... geeesh, so lame, what does a website have to do with your music library or OS updates!??!!?!....... you set on what Apple tells you when you can/cannot do....... whatever... with Google Android... OWN YOUR PHONE... LIVE FREE... OS update via OTA or email... Music controled by yourself via a PC/Mac sync... and the customization is just freakin endless that it puts any smartphone to shame.......

Marketshare states customers want personalization and customization of their cell phone.... Apple just doent provide that..... and that is why Apple is dying and lossing stock and why Android became so popular in 1 year---what took Apple iphone 4 years to do.........

I know i ranted..... but, if iphone 5 is going to be like ipad when compared to the previous device, then Apple is really dead... LOL...


When I use wifi tether my browsers don't load how can I fix this?
Q. I use android wifi tether but for some reason on my laptop browsers don't load and I am sure the connection works because other things that need the Internet work like updates

A. First of all, Android is Linux. It's a custom Linux kernel with a special software layer on top. And the customizations to the kernel and the software layer sitting on top of it are pretty important for it to run on the rather specialized smartphone architecture.

Second, a kernel has to be compiled to run on a certain architecture. So you'd have to find a version of Linux compiled for an ARM processor. That's not much of a problem. Several distributions, including Ubuntu, have ARM kernels. But then you'd have to have kernel modules for the drivers of the smartphone hardware, which... isn't nearly as likely. And you'd probably need a specially-designed interface, since Gnome or KDE really wouldn't work on a 4-inch touchscreen. And all of that would also have to be specially compiled for the kernel. And that's before we start with the application software. And by the time you got all of that working... you'd essentially have Android.

And even if you could do all of that, you'd have to have some way of booting from the USB, which you can't since smartphone firmware boots the kernel directly, without any sort of bootloader like you have on a personal computer.

If you want Android to be more Linux-y -- whatever that means, since the Linux experience differs greatly based on the graphical interface (assuming you use one) -- you can install a terminal emulator and even the bash shell. If you play around with it a bit, you might be able to install some command-line Linux software. But even then, it wouldn't be terribly useful, given the limited ability to enter text on a smartphone.

What is the best android calendar for multiple phones?

Q. My wife and I both have the htc incredible and would like to figure out the best way to have synchronized calenders. The android marketplace is infested with calendars and I have no clue what my best option is. Basically I just want each of us to be able to add a calendar event and have it show up on both phones.

A. I rather like Android Agenda

Just config it so you show the SAME Google Calendar on both phones. You may have to "share" the calendar with the other Google account on the computer first. The calendar are specific to the account, but can be shared with other accounts.

How do you add an Android tablet as a device to your Google account?
Q. So I got an Android MID table for Christmas and I need help adding it to my google account as an device, so that I can install apps from Market Apps. When I tried to add it as a device I had to put a phone number and my tablet doesn't have a phone number. My question is how do I add it as an device to my google account?

A. I unexpectedly managed to add the device, by using the "Calendar" application and selecting the "Google" option, which required me to sign in and after that it automatically linked the device to the account.

However, this is not enough, since when trying to use the Android market i get the same "no phones are linked to this account" message. :-|
