What do I need to make applications for android phones?

Q. I already know how to program in Flash, Java, and the basics of c++. I was looking for an internship for the summer, and failed. So I thought I would teach myself how to make applications for the android phones. So what do I need to get started?
Ok thanks jaffamol. I am downloading eclipse now. Before I was using JGrasp as a IDE(for java).

A. You will need:

Java Development Kit (and JRE, which most people have anyway) : http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

Android SDK : http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html

The best IDE EVER! Eclipse : http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/download.php?file=/technology/epp/downloads/release/galileo/SR2/eclipse-java-galileo-SR2-win32.zip

ADT plugin for Eclipse : http://developer.android.com/sdk/eclipse-adt.html

That's what you need to get started, this will give you an IDE to develop in and emulators to test with.

Get started with a guide to Android development : http://developer.android.com/guide/index.html

-------------------------------------------------------------
No problem, I find Eclipse much better than anything else, and it's recommended for Android development. You could use other IDE's but Android has a plugin for Eclipse which will give you things like, intellisense, easily debug applications in the emulator, easily export unsigned and signed applications, easily view all threads, memory and all that lovely stuff.

What does it take to make a smartphone APP?
Q. Like apps for iPhone and Android. What knowldge do I need to have to make a quality app? Do different apps use different programming languages or is it all standard? How long would it take before I can make a good app?

A. To make a smartphone app, you firstly need a IDE (Integrated Debugging Environment). Like, to name few, there are: Eclipse, Carbide C++, etc. If you wish to develop you application program in Java, you need to have the JDK7u4.

Then get the SDK (Software Development Kit) for which you want to develop the apps. Like, the Android-SDK for developing the android app. Next thing is that, you will have to be good at your programming skills.

Once you get the proper IDE then download the SDK and run it. Select the option to integrate with the existing IDE.

The rest is self-explanatory. To know more, you can refer to my blog. I have shared the link.

A. Go to

http://developer.android.com/index.html

Download the SDK / ADT Bundle - this is the IDE and an emulator for you to be able to develop an Android app.

Then check out the samples from the same website.

Is there any way to practice coding in Python on an Android device?

Q. I don't want to write anything for an Android device, I just want a way to input code and view the output as a way to practice on the go.

A. There was one or two programs I tried to use to run the IDE for python, but it was sketchy at best. Sorry, you will have to stick with PC.

Do you need to know Java before starting Android programming?

Q. Right now I am learning Actionscript 3 with Flex/Flash , however I purchased a book about Android mobile programming(google) do I really need to know Java before starting Android Develop?
I was looking at some Android code, Of course I was not familiar with the syntax of it but I could understand the code.

A. ActionScript kinda gives you Objects, but does not require Objects. The Timeline is a crutch that chunks your proceedural code efforts.

Java, on the other hand, makes Objects mandatory to get anything done. After that, Android is much like Google Web Toolkit. Your java is then morphed into Android to run.

I would suggest the NetBeans IDE, add the Android plug-in. You get an emulator and a code syntax checker. Get a good book on Android.

How do I develop Android Apps in DrJava?

Thanks!

What would be the first steps to creating an application for an Android Operating Phone?
Q. Is it possible to sell or distribute through the Android Market?
Thanks Ben I am Downloading !!!!

A. Yes it is possible to sell your personal apps through the Android market. The first thing you have to do is download the Android SDK and the eclipse IDE. Then, you can mess around with Android's customized version of Java for a while. Once you have your program written, you can set up an account with Google and submit it to the Android marketplace. There are links to the marketplace from the SDK website.

I'm a physicist and want to learn programming. Which language should I learn?
Q. I want a multi-platform language, that is strong (can build small as well as big applications) and can even be used for portable platforms (like Android). I have only some limited experience with Matlab. Which language do you recommend as a starting point?

A. I believe the 'natural' language of Android is Java. It's a good, modern, portable language. Also, Java is the standard language for the Eclipse IDE (Integrated development environment), which is totally free and has good support.

To be honest though, once you've learnt one object-orientated language, it's relatively easy to learn another one.

What program should I use to write android application for cell phone?

Q. I would like to find a free program that I can use for programming applications for an android cell phone. I am a beginning programmer. Do you have any recommendations?

A. For developing Android applications, you can use the Eclipse IDE.Once the Eclipse IDE is installed, you need to install a custom plug-in called the Android Development Tools (ADT). This tool adds Android project support in Eclipse and should be downloaded and installed by all Android developers.

Where is the tools directory for NetBeans stored in Ubuntu?
Q. I'm trying to create software for my Android phone and need to create an AVD, and to do so I need to find the Tools directory for my IDE. The problem is I have no clue where NetBeans stores it's tools folder. Where can I find it?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

A. Did you use Synaptic? I don't like where the default java goes into
/home/usr/share

So, consider this. I do let Synaptic install its version of Sun java (or Oracle) where it wants to. That way I can use the Terminal to javac and java and javadoc. Also, java plug-in works in Firefox.

For code, I download the NetBeans/java bundle and install that to a folder in my /home folder. In home (username)I have
jdk1.6.0_22
java_libraries
netbeans-6.9.1
NetBeansProjects

So that I can add and take out files, images, code, libraries, plug-ins and select the tools I want. If you were set up that way, you would find nebeans-6.9.1/avd/android

But in the Synaptic, you have to be sudo (administrator) to make any modifications in /home/usr/share

good luck, Android is what I promised myself, but I keep finding java code to do.
