What's the best free ebook reader for android?
Q. I have a samsung tab 2, 7". What's the best free ebook reader you can suggest? as much as possible pdf but I'm okay with any file type. Hopefully the kind that can adjust properly to the screen and has turning page transition. thank you.

What is the best ebook reader?
Q. I am thinking of getting an ebook reader for the new year. Can anyone give me their opinions/experience with any of the readers out there. I am trying to get a good one at an affordable price but need more info to decide on the right one. I know the Kindle and Nook are very popular, what do you all think?

A. Hi, Princess Yoda, when choosing an eReader, you need to consider not only the physical properties of the device, but also compare eBook stores behind it. Sony has never been a contender for any comparison by anyone as they only have like 5 books in their Ebook store and their devices are way overpriced for what they offer. Borders is behind Kobo/Cruz devices in US and as you might of heard, Borders is on a brink of bankruptcy. Kindle and Nook are the only devices to be considered as their eBook stores have over a million of free public ebooks as well as over a million of ebooks that you need to pay for available.
Having that out of the way, you should then decide which screen you want: e-Ink or LCD. It depends on what you're reading. If just black & white novels then the better one would be Kindle or e-Ink Nook from Barnes & Noble. If you read electronic magazines or college text books with a lot of color graphs and charts or childrens' books with a lot of pictures then the better would be Nook Color LCD from Barnes & Noble. Then, you should understand the limitations of e-Ink eReaders - they are limited to be black & white for now they "blink" at each ebooks page turn, they're not too good for web browsing, they need external light source for reading when dark, and they cannot handle videos.
Whichever device you choose, here's the advantages of the Nooks (both e-Ink black & white and Nook Color) over Kindle:
- Any Barnes & Noble store provides free Wi-Fi to Nook's
- Nook allows to lend Nook books for two weeks to friends and family or share with your other devices that run B&N app (PC, MAC, Android phones, Apple iPhone, iPod and iPad, etc.) Barnes & Noble allows (when you walk in with the Nook to B&N store) to read any available eBook for free while in the store via free provided in the store Wi-Fi. With Nook, while in BN store you get exclusive articles from top authors, and great offers including cafe treats and unique deals.
- Nook (unlike Kindle) can be used for library ebooks.
- Nook (unlike Kindle) can be used for renting text-ebooks.
Nook Color is worth mentioning separately as this is a hybrid Android eReader/tablet device, something between Kindle and iPad. Even though Nook Color has LCD touchscreen, it's a new generation screen which is anti-glare coated and is better performing in sunlight and produces less glare all of which are dooming reading on iPad. Also, the screen is amazing and readable/viewable at wide angles.
Overall, Nook Color is more than e-Reader as you can also watch video and use Android applications on it. It's a hybrid device, much more than just an e-Reader but not a full tablet as it doesn't have a camera. If all you want is to read novels, Kindle (or the original e-Ink Nook) might be better for you. If you want something more from your device (color graphs and charts of college text books, childrens books, photos and videos, web sites in full color) at half of the price of iPad or Galaxy tab, then Nook Color is your best bet.
Nook Color has several apps that already come with the device (Pandora Internet radio, QuickOffice, etc.) Also, Barnes & Noble recently released Nook SDK and Nook Developer platform that will allow most of the existing 100,000 Android apps be ported to it. Also, you can use the Social Settings screen to link your NOOK Color to your Facebook account and your Twitter account. You can also import all your contacts from your Google Gmail account. Once you have linked to Facebook and Twitter and set up email contacts, you can lend and borrow books, recommend books, and share favorite quotes with your friends.

What is the best ebook reader out there?
Q. I want to get an ebook reader for Christmas so I was just wondering which ebook reader is the best one out there. I'm not really looking for anything too expensive and I'm just looking for a simple ebook. I don't want an ebook with tons of other functions.

I'd like one that's less than $200.
I also want to know what you're opinion on the Nook Color and Kindle 3 and which one you like the best.

A. Forget Kindle or Kobo, it's so last year. Get Nook (3G or Wi-Fi) or or Nook Color (Wi-Fi) from bn.com or any Barnes & Noble physical store or BestBuy or Walmart. 3G means the internet connection is included for free for the life of the device thus you can download a new book even when you're walking on the street. Wi-Fi means that you need to have access to wireless hotspot - one example would be any Barnes & Noble store that provide free Wi-Fi to Nook's or at your home. There's over a million of free public ebooks as well as over a million of ebooks that you need to pay for available through Barnes & Noble eBook store. Prices are generally much lower than for physical books.
Nook wins.
- Nook allows to lend books for 2 weeks to friends or to your other devices that run B&N app. Barnes & Noble allows (when you walk in with the Nook to B&N store) to read any available eBook for free while in the store via free provided in the store Wi-Fi. With Nook, while in BN store you get exclusive articles from top authors, and great offers including cafe treats and unique deals.
- Nook Color is better as a color e-Reader than Kindle simply because it has color and Kindle is black and white. Content that greatly benefits from color - such as kids books and magazines - looks much better and sharper on Nook Color's screen.
- Nook Color is better as an e-Reader in general than iPad. It has a new generation screen which is anti-glare coated and is better performing in sunlight than iPad's. Also, as it's smaller in size than iPad, the text appears sharper on Nook's screen. Also it has 12,000 (more soon) kids books that are built as a game with feedback.
- Nook Color has been picked as the editors choice by PC Magazine while pro reviewers of other sites (CNET, ZDNet, Engadget, AllThingsDigital, etc.) mentioned that it tested to be pretty fast for apps and PDF's, and has a beautiful screen.
- Overall, Nook Color is more than e-Reader as you can also watch video and use Android applications on it. It's a hybrid device, much more than just an e-Reader but not a full tablet as it doesn't have a camera. If all you want is to read novels, Kindle (or the original e-Ink Nook) might be better for you. If you want something more from your device at half of the price of iPad or Galaxy tab, then Nook Color is your best bet.

what is the best tablet to replace computer for taking on holidays?
Q. Hi there, i am going to usa in January so am looking for a tablet comp to take with me. it needs to be light, WiFi for emails and Facebook +f/b games. eBook reader, and small games eg bigfish games with a long lasting battery. what are your suggestions? thanks for your help. i am in Australia

A. By all means, do not buy an ipad. Those are way overpriced. Get one of theses: BlackBerry PlayBook, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1V, Motorola Xoom. Just get the one you like best as they are all good. Note: if you use gmail you better get one of the android based tablets.

What eBook reader is recommended for renting college textbooks?

Q. I'll be entering college next month and I've been hearing it's more affordable to get your textbooks electronically rather than getting the physical books themselves. From the Nook, iPad, Kindle, or whatever other eBook readers there are, what would you recommend the most?

A. Hi, Meg Ryan, neither Nook nor Kindle handles eTextbooks well however Barnes and Noble has something for a regular PC or MAC including a laptop or a desktop. An eTextbook is a digital, downloadable, version of a physical textbook. It can be read on your PC and Mac with B&N's free NOOKstudy application. An eTextbook will look exactly like the physical version so you will see the same graphs, charts, drawings etc. The best part is that you can read your eTextbook anywhere that you bring your computer without needing the internet! And, you have the option to purchase or rent it depending on your needs.
In terms of Nook vs. Kindle for everything else, current e-Ink Nook is much better than current e-ink Kindle as Nook has the latest generation touch screen display, no page turn lag, it weights less, and its battery lasts twice as long, and it doesn't blink on each page turn. Having that out of the way, you should then decide which screen you want: e-Ink or LCD. It depends on what you're reading. If just black & white novels then the better one would be e-Ink Nook from Barnes & Noble. If you read electronic magazines or college text books with a lot of color graphs and charts or childrens' books with a lot of pictures then the better would be Nook Color LCD from Barnes & Noble. Whichever device you choose, here's the advantages of the Nooks (both e-Ink black & white and Nook Color) over Kindle:
- Any Barnes & Noble store provides free Wi-Fi to Nook's and when you walk in with the Nook to B&N store, youre allowed to read any available eBook for free while in the store via free provided in the store Wi-Fi. With Nook, while in BN store you get exclusive articles from top authors, and great offers including cafe treats and unique deals.
- Nook allows to lend Nook books for two weeks to friends and family or share with your other devices that run B&N app (PC, MAC, Android phones, Apple iPhone, iPod and iPad, etc.)
- Nook (unlike Kindle) can be used for library ebooks.
Kindle only supports eBooks in its proprietary AZW format. Nook, on the other hand, supports both DRM-protected and DRM-free ebooks in ePub format thus it supports ebooks from B&N store, from any other DRM-free source on the web, and from public libraries.

- Nook (unlike Kindle) can be used for library ebooks.
- Nook (unlike Kindle) can be used for renting text-ebooks.

Can you convert books from your pc to a handheld digital book reader?

Q. Like a pandigital android ebook reader.. would I be able to convert a pdf file to that from my computer??thanks

A. At the present time i don't think there is any easy way to do this. Each type of digital book reader has a very specific format: it is all quite competitive and each brand does all it can to give itself an "edge", so formats are part of this battle. If you know any computer nerds i'm sure they could figure it out given a bit of time but i'm pretty sure there are no "off the shelf methods of doing what you describe. (sure would be nice though...)

- Nook (unlike Kindle) can be used for library ebooks.
Kindle only supports eBooks in its proprietary AZW format. Nook, on the other hand, supports both DRM-protected and DRM-free ebooks in ePub format thus it supports ebooks from B&N store, from any other DRM-free source on the web, and from public libraries.

what is the best tablet to replace computer for taking on holidays?

How to break the time limit on ebooks?
Q. I have a sony 300 pocket reader, and I download egalleys from S&S. But they have a time limit on them, usually expiring within 60 days. Is there a program I can download that breaks the time limit. Or is there something I can do manually to break it?

A. Sony Reader's default ebook file type is .ePub, and the limitation is DRM protection, so , you can remove drm from epub!
ePub Drm Removal is a powerfull software to remove drm protections from epub with no quality lossing. Just remove the epub files drm header, no change on the files. Read the ePub on iPad,iPhone,iTouch,Sony Reader,Android, Nook etc.

Is there an ebook platform that supports interactive content?
Q. I know that with Nook, Kindle, and iBook platforms, you can embed audio and video, but I wonder if any can go beyond that for a more fully interactive experience. I know that it could be done just by developing an app for the App Store or Android Market, but this is a less than ideal solution.

A. Sounds like what you want is "the world wide web", or HTML. It's supported on most ebook readers.
There are no ebook specific formats that support the level of interaction available on the web, because that would be silly and redundant.
