Young and Well-Off Choose Smartphones, As Do Non-Whites

About 35 percent of all adult U.S. phone owners own a smartphone, according to a Pew report on Monday. Those that own them are among the most financially well off, college-educated, and non-white.

Not surprisingly, the Google Android operating system was the preferred mobile platform, echoing more comprehensive surveys that came up with the same result.

The survey of 2,277 American adults found that about 39 percent owners classified their devices as a "smartphone platform," which included iPhones, BlackBerrys, or Android, Windows or Palm OSes.
